MOSOP bemoans court renewal of Shell OML 11 licence

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni PeopleThe Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has bemoaned a court order directing the Federal Government to renew the Oil Mining Licence (OML) 11 operatorship for 20 years to the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SDPC).

MOSOP President, Legborsi Pyagbara said the court order raises issue of worry and deep concern that the cries, woes and anguish of Ogoni people seem not to be seen and understood, in a country they belong and have made huge sacrifices to keep together.

A Federal High Court in Abuja last Friday, ordered the Minister of Petroleum Resources, President Muhammadu Buhari, to grant the renewal to Shell without the reduction in the size of its field coverage.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in his judgment delivered on Shell’s suit, however, ruled that the renewal would be for 20 years and not 30 years, as requested by the company.

Pyagbara said people of Ogoni have over the years consistently and non-violently drawn the attention of all institutions, successive governments, fellow citizens and international communities to their persistent injustice and plight as host to the oil multinationals.
