We’ll resist resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland’

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) said they would resist any attempt by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Sahara Energy, and Shell to gain access to the Ogoni oilfields forcefully.

MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke stated this while addressing Congress in Gokana, accusing the oil firms of sponsoring violence that would threaten the peace of the Niger Delta region while they do not share the ideals for justice and fairness.

Nsuke also added, ‘The failure of the federal government to address the Ogoni problem over three decades is genocidal and pushes the people of the area to live in an environment without infrastructure, no livelihoods and gradually going into extinction.

He said the poverty and neglect have a devastating blow on the survival and security of the people, describing them as a symbol of genocide by oil companies against the people’s resolve to stand for human rights and justice.

“We are considering the enormous contributions of the Ogoni people in Nigeria which, according to records, far exceeded $200billion in the past 60 years, yet, the demand for a fair share from the natural endowments is not forthcoming.”

Similarly, Nsuke said that they have a right to decide their priorities and chart a path to the future, such as an engagement between the government and other relevant stakeholders to streamline the best approaches that will lead to a resolution of all disputed areas.
