• Six More Colleges Of Education To Take Off This Year
• Teachers To Access N7.5b Research Grant

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, said his administration was determined to reposition teaching profession by producing quality teachers and raising educational standards in Nigeria.
Also, the president urged teachers to access the N7.5b research grants available for them to enhance the teaching and learning.
He regretted that teachers did not access the facility in the past.
Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, at the 27th combined convocation of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE), Owerri, Imo State, disclosed that six new colleges of education (one each from each geo-political zone, including two technical colleges) would take off before the end of this year.
Meanwhile, 2,030 Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE), 4,024 Bachelor of Education (in affiliation to the UNN), and 152 Professional Diploma in Education graduands, participated.
The event, which was attended by the Provost Dr. Dan Chijioke Anyanwu, featured the conferment of award of fellowship on Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastic Province, Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna; elder statesman, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu; Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Charles Igwe (represented); former Provost of AIFCE, Dr. Blessing Ijioma; the Chief of Staff, Government House, Owerri, Nnamdi Anyaehie; a marine expert, Emma Iheanacho, and other government officials and educationists.
The President directed the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFUND) to support teachers in Nigeria.
“The Federal Government has established six new Colleges of Education, one in each geo -political zone; two of the colleges are technical. All will hopefully, take off before the year runs out. Government is committed to addressing staff welfare of the colleges of education. Arrears of promotion salaries owed are being worked out…”
“You are urged to access the funds and engage in meaningful researches to enhance teaching and learning for economic development. The sum of N7.5b was set aside in 2017, but no College of Education teacher approached for the research grant. This is very appealing. I have asked that this be addressed in 2022. We have set aside another N7.5b. Please, try and put up research proposals that can afford you access…,” he said.
Igwe urged the graduating students to excel in the larger society, having been taught and found worthy in character and learning by the authorities of the colleges affiliated to the UNN.
Also, Anyanwu said graduating students were thoroughly taught and found fit to excel in the society.
