Confirms five more deaths, rising infections

Edo State has confirmed the death of five more persons, who were not inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines, urging citizens to get vaccinated against the virus.

Incident Manager of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this after the daily virtual meeting presided over by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Obi said three of the new fatalities were reported from the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, while the other two were confirmed at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISTH), adding that the new deaths raised the number of casualties in the third wave of the pandemic to 64.

He stressed the need for residents to get vaccinated against the deadly virus, adding that the state government had inoculated over 82, 849 persons across the state in the second phase of the vaccination exercise.
Obi, who disclosed that the state will begin administering the second dose of Moderna vaccines today for those who were inoculated with the first dose in the second phase vaccination, urged residents to take advantage of the exercise to remain alive and healthy.

“In the last 72 hours, Edo State recorded five more deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic. The deceased were all unvaccinated, which reaffirms the need for everyone to get inoculated to stay alive and healthy.
“We also confirmed 58 new cases from the 492 samples collected in the last 72 hours, with 52 recoveries and 616 active cases being managed at various treatment and isolation facilities across the state,” he said.

He also disclosed that the state had collected 14,898 samples of which it recorded 1,270 confirmed cases, 590 recoveries and a test positivity rate of 11.8 per cent.
