Buhari urged to declare emergency on northern states

Plateau State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have differed over recent killings in the state by terrorists.

In the heat of the insurgency, the Acting Chairman, Caretaker Committee of APC in the state, Enoch Fanmak, told journalists: “We specially commend the governor for his proactive steps in ensuring quick intervention towards ensuring that the situation does not go out of control.

“We believe the governor has done his best, but is greatly limited because of lack of direct control.” But PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, who was House of Assembly Speaker, Emmanuel Go’ar, while addressing journalists at the party’s secretariat in Jos, asked Fanmak: “Does the governor require the direct control of the security agencies to stay at home with his people in their times of trial and to unite them to respond in one accord to security challenges?”

He said: “The APC government has woefully failed this nation in all parameters, particularly its three cardinal programmes –fixing economy, security and anti-corruption battle.”

APC, through its chairman in the state, stated: “We note with utter disgust and total disappointment the desperate attempt by some members of PDP to use this unfortunate development to advance selfish and cheap political ambitions.

“In particular, we have noted their unacceptable utterances and inciting comments on both the traditional and social media, which are carefully targeted at discrediting the Governor Simon Lalong and portraying the government as uncaring with the hope of reviving their faded glory as a rejected political party in the state and country at large.”

WORRIED by the increasing carnage in the northern part of the country, the Federal Government has been urged to declare a state of emergency on the northern states to preserve life and property.

A socio-political activist and critic, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, stated yesterday that Nigerians were tired of the wanton killing of innocent people by Boko Haram, AK-47 rifle-wielding herdsmen, kidnappers and other terrorist groups ravaging the north unabated.

Onitiri ridiculed the National Assembly for abdicating its responsibilities to check the executive arm of government, despite the humongous money allocated for security.
