Algerian Prime Minister Ayman Benabderrahmane tested positive for COVID-19, Algerian state TV reported on Saturday.

Benabderrahmane will go into quarantine for one week, state TV said, but will continue to discharge his duties virtually.

The news comes just three days after Benabderrahmane, a former finance minister, formed his government. Benabderrahmane replaced Abdelaziz Djerad, who resigned following a parliamentary election on June 12.

State TV added that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had directed his administration to reimpose physical distancing and mask-wearing measures across the country in addition to hastening a vaccination drive to cope with a spike in infections.
