MediaTek’s G-series chipsets have dominated the budget and mid-range market thanks to high GPU performance. But there are certain things about Helio G95 which make it a poor choice in 2021.

If you are going to buy a mid-range device today, chances are your device will be powered by Helio G95. So should you buy it because of its high performance, or skip it because it’s not good in the long term? Let’s check out the details below.

First of all, let me give a brief introduction to Helio G95. The Helio G90T was launched in 2019 and debuted with Redmi Note 8 Pro. I have used the smartphone and I was blown away from the performance. It was indeed a paradise for gamers on a budget. PUBG Mobile? You got it that with the extreme frame rate at 60fps which was not possible by counterpart Snapdragon processors. Jumping to 2020, Helio G90T got rebranded into Helio G95 with slightly higher GPU frequency. Not a big improvement in performance, but we know it was purely done to create the hype.

The processor is based on a 12 nm FinFET process. It comes with 2x big ARM Cortex-A76 cores with up to 2.05 GHz and 6x small and power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores (max. 2 GHz) in two clusters. Pretty decent in terms of cores however 12nm is a way outdated architecture. Comparing it to its biggest competitor, Snapdragon 732G is based on Samsung’s 8nm process. 12nm is one of the biggest drawbacks of the processor. It not only means that the chipset gets warm but the battery life is also mediocre.

2: No 5G

Another con of the Helio G95 processor is the lack of 5G connectivity. As mentioned earlier, Helio G95 is a rebranded Helio G90T which means it has the same network capabilities. The G95 only supports 4G LTE connections. If you are a person who buys a smartphone once in a blue moon, then Helio G95 is not your cup of tea. It is not futureproof compared to Dimensity chipset or Snapdragon 5G chipsets.

Final Verdict

Helio g95

Helio G90T was a great processor in 2018. But companies milking the same processor in 2021 doesn’t make sense. In my opinion, you should go for other chipsets. If futureproof is your concern, go for a Dimensity chipset. They perform fine and have the latest 5G connectivity. For gamers, you would have to give up 5G in the mid-range market but what you can get is Snapdragon 860 on POCO X3 Pro. It is based on 8nm Samsung’s process and will perform way better compared to Helio G95.
