The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) on Tuesday allayed fears that the use of foreign currency as legal tender was no longer allowed.

Zimbabweans use a basket of foreign currencies for transactions – in particular the U.S. dollar – in addition to the Zimbabwe dollar.

However, there have recently been various reports on social media purporting that the central bank had banned the use of the U.S. dollar as legal tender, causing some people to panic and prompting the central bank to respond.

RBZ governor John Mangudya said in a statement that people who were purveying such messages were irresponsible and mischievous and were bent on causing panic among members of the public.

“These articles and statements are false and should be treated with the contempt they deserve, as there is no policy or law that prohibits the use of foreign currency in Zimbabwe as alleged,” Mangudya said.

He said the statements were meant to discredit the Zimbabwean government and the central bank’s “progressive efforts and achievements in stabilizing and growing the economy.”
