The attacks on peaceful protesters across Nigeria have been condemned by Amnesty International (AI).

Protesters trooped out in major cities across the nation to demand better governance and improved living condition for citizens as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day.

But some protesters have been allegedly attacked by both the police and opposing groups.

Afriupdate had earlier reported how security operatives alongside Transport union workers have reportedly dispersed June 12 protesters from the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota area of Lagos state while a June 12 protester has been reportedly mobbed by some persons who identified themselves as supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari at Unity Fountain, Abuja.

Writing via its Twitter handle, Amnesty International said the reports of attacks on those protecting were troubling.

The organisation asked the government and security agencies to respect fundamental human rights and end the attacks.

“Amnesty International has been receiving disturbing reports of attacks on peaceful protesters in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan. Some protesters have also been arrested while others were injured,” it said.

“We again call on the Nigerian authorities to respect human rights and end attacks on peaceful protesters.”
