A Tanzanian senior official told parliament on Friday the government plans to employ 10,467 health workers to fill the shortage of health personnel in rural areas across the East African nation of about 60 million people.

Festo Dugange, the Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, said the health workers will be employed in the 2021/2022 financial year that begins on July 1.

Dugange told the House in the capital Dodoma that the health workers will include laboratory technicians, medical technicians and pharmacists.

The minister said the health workers will be deployed in health centers and dispensaries in rural areas across the country.
