Kenya reports 870 new COVID-19 cases, seven deaths
Health workers personal protective equipment (PPE) record the details of residents, as they stand at social distance to each other, during a Covid-19 testing drive at Olympic Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Halfway through Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyattas second term his pledge of transforming the economy through manufacturing, farming, health care and low-cost housing have been slow to show results, and the coronavirus pandemic could now reduce that to little more than an election promise. Kenya continued recording a steady rise in confirmed coronavirus cases as the Ministry of Health on Saturday reported 870 new cases raising the total number of cases 112,805.

The daily figure is the highest recorded so far this year and it comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced new measures to curb the spread of the virus.

It is also exactly a year since the East African country reported its first case of the virus.

“A total of 650 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,929 patients are on Home-Based Isolation and Care. 98 patients are in the ICU, 25 of whom are on ventilatory support and 60 on supplemental oxygen. 13 patients are on observation,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Another 25 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 23 of them in the general wards and two in the High Dependency Unit (HDU),” it added.

The ministry also reported seven additional deaths pushing the death toll from the pandemic to 1,908. Meanwhile, the number of recoveries rose by 117 to stand at 88,326.

After appearing to have the pandemic under control, the recent surge in the number of daily new cases prompted the Health ministry declare that a third wave of virus infections was underway.

This in turn saw President Kenyatta, on Friday, extend the nighttime curfew by a further 60 days and ban all political gatherings for 30 days. He also announced caps on the number of people allowed to attend funerals and religious ceremonies.

Kenyatta appealed Kenyans to strictly follow the health measures even as authorities continue administering vaccines, which he encouraged people to get, but said was voluntary.
