Of the many scholarships in Europe, a few are on offer without fail every year.

1. VLIR-UOS Training and Masters Scholarships in Belgium

Brief description: 

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from 31 eligible countries in Africa, Asia and Latin-America, to follow an English-taught training or master programme at a Flemish university or university college in Belgium.

English Taught Training (ITP) and Master’s programmes (ICP) at participating Belgian Universities

Number of Awards:

12 scholarships are awarded for each Training and Master’s programme.

Target group:

Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa

Asia: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Vietnam

Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru

Scholarship value/inclusions/duration:

VLIR-UOS only provides full scholarships for the total duration of the training or Master. The scholarships cover allowance, accommodation, insurance, international travel and tuition fee.

Eligibility Requirements:

You can only apply for a scholarship if you meet the following requisites:

Nationality and Country of Residence

A candidate should be a national and resident of one of the 31 countries of the VLIR-UOS country list for scholarships (not necessarily the same country) at the time of application.

Age

The maximum age for a Master programme candidate is 35 years for an initial masters and 45 years for an advanced masters. The candidate cannot succeed this age on January 1 of the intake year. 

Professional background and experience

Priority is given to candidates who are employed in academic institutions, research institutes, governments, the social economy or NGOs, or who aim at a career in one of these sectors.

However, master candidates employed in the profit sector or newly graduated candidates without any work experience can be eligible for the scholarship as well, depending on their motivation and profile. The training candidate should have relevant professional experience and a support letter confirming (re)integration in a professional context where the acquired knowledge and skills will be immediately applicable.

Application instructions:

Via the university’s website, you will have to apply for both admission to the programme as well as for the scholarship itself. When you apply for the programme, be sure to mention whether you wish to apply for a scholarship. The deadline varies and are determined by the programme but most deadlines are around 1 February or 1 March 2021 for Masters Programmes. The call of applications for training programmes will open at various times and can be monitored at this link.

2. Holland Scholarship for Non-EEA International Students

This scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as well as several Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences.

The scholarship amounts to € 5,000. You will receive this in the first year of your studies. Please note that this is not a full-tuition scholarship.

Grant award period

The grant is awarded for 1 year and can only be received once.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Your nationality is non-EEA.
  • You are applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s programme at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions.
  • You meet the specific requirements of the institution of your choice. You can find these on the website of the institution.
  • You do not have a degree from an education institution in the Netherlands.

Application Deadlines

The application round for academic year 2021-2022 will open on 1 November 2020. The deadline for application is either 1 February 2021 or 1 May 2021. Please check the website of the institution of your choice to confirm the correct deadline.

3. Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs.

It gives opportunity to the future foreign decision-makers of the private and public sectors, in priority areas of study, and encourages applicants up to 25 years old from developing countries at master’s level, and applicants up to 30 years old from developing and industrialized countries at PhD level.

Eligibility Criteria 

Nationality: The Eiffel Program is reserved for non-French nationals. Candidates with
two nationalities of which one is French are not eligible.
Age: Candidates for the master’s component must be 25 or under at the time of the

2020 competition—that is, they must have been born after March 1995. Candidates
for the doctoral component must be 30 or under at the time of the 2020 competition;
they must have been born after March 1990.

Source of applications: Only applications submitted by French educational
institutions will be accepted. These institutions commit to admitting awardees to the
academic program specified in the application. Applications from any other source
shall not be considered. Any candidate nominated by more than one institution shall
be disqualified.

Academic levels targeted: Eiffel Program scholarships are intended for students
seeking to enroll in a master’s-level program in France (including at a school of
engineering) and for doctoral candidates. Only programs recognized by the French
government are eligible. The Eiffel Program cannot be used at French-run programs
abroad or in connection with apprenticeship contracts or professional training
contracts.

Scholarship conflicts: Applications nominating students who, at the time of
application, have already been awarded another French government scholarship will
not be accepted, even if the other scholarship covered only health insurance.

Master’s component: An application nominating a student rejected in a previous
competition will not be accepted, even if the application was submitted by a different
institution or in another field of study. Students who have previously received an
Eiffel master’s scholarship are not eligible to receive another at the master’s level.

Doctoral component: Institutions may nominate for a doctoral scholarship a
candidate previously awarded a scholarship at the master’s level. Candidates
previously awarded a doctoral scholarship are not eligible to receive another. An
applications nominating a candidate rejected in a previous competition will not be
accepted, even if the application was submitted by a different institution or in another
field of study.

Language proficiency: When preselecting non-French-speaking candidates,

institutions shall ensure that the candidates’ language skills meet the requirements
of the academic program.

  • Opening of the call for applications: week of September 28, 2020
  • Deadline for the reception of applications by Campus France:  January 8th 2021.

4. Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

Eligibility Criteria 

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

  •  Candidate profile
  • Quality of the research project or artistic work
  •  Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

5. The DAAD Scholarship in Germany | scholarships in Europe

Fully-funded by the German government,the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) Scholarship in Germany is the world’s largest funding organisation for international students from developing countries. This organisation was founded in the year 1925 and ever since then, it has funded around two million scholars in Germany and abroad.
