'Prime Puyol': Some Chelsea fans loved £34m man who made 3 clearances vs Sheffield United

Chelsea supporters respected the performance of Antonio Rudiger against Sheffield United despite his comical own goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s side won their third consecutive Premier League game after a tough evening away in Sheffield.

Mason Mount opened the scoring just before half time but United were level after Rudiger inadvertently put the ball past Edouard Mendy into his own net.

The Blues were back in front just four minutes later through a Jorginho penalty as Timo Werner was brought down by Aaron Ramsdale.

Rudiger responded extremely well following his horror moment and Chelsea supporters were quick to rally behind their central defender.

Own goal aside, Rudiger has had a MOTM performance.

Rudiger actually had a cracking game today. That one incident will sadly overshadow all his great work, though.

Bro Rudiger suddenly remembered how to defend. 2 world class pieces of defensive work in 5 minutes there

— Moinul (@Moinul123) February 7, 2021

Werner was named Man of the Match by Sky Sports for his contribution towards both of Chelsea’s strikes, yet Rudiger’s resilience was equally as important.

He made three clearances, two tackles, blocked two shots and made one interception in what was a generally solid defensive display (WhoScored.com).

His form has returned to the kind that Chelsea first experienced when they signed him for £34m (Guardian) from Roma in 2017.

Tuchel has revitalised Rudiger by starting him in his first four games in charge. He had been used the exact same amount of times by Frank Lampard in his half-season in charge.

You have to say, Rudiger certainly made up for his laughable mistake that also gifted United a point.

He made some excellent defensive actions and it’s great to see his personal improvement under Tuchel.
