In response, the Argentine says he always tries to be respectful on the football field and support disadvantaged people.
International organization Peace and Sport have named Leo Messi as their ‘champion for peace of the year’, they’ve confirmed on Twitter.
They wrote: “It is a great honour to welcome such an incredible athlete and person in our #ChampionsforPeace Club, recognized not only for his fair play but also for his social commitment.”
As this organization is based in Monaco, Prince Albert II had his say as well: “We believe that the example Messi sets as a role model for fair play on the field and also his social contribution makes a true impact on today’s society.”
Messi replied: “Respect for others is something I learned as a child and always try to apply on the football field. I hope to continue to inspire and support people from disadvantaged backgrounds.”
In 2008, the Barca great founded the Leo Messi Foundation which helps the children all over the world. This year, he has made several donations to the schools and hospitals in Barcelona, Argentina and Syria.
As for Peace and Sport, it is an independent organization which make sport a vehicle in the fight against poverty and discrimination. Chelsea legend Didier Drogba is their current vice-president.
