The Argentine is yet to set up a goal in the Spanish top flight this term but you can’t really blame him for that.
Lionel Messi hasn’t registered a single assist in 11 La Liga appearances this season so far.
Why that fact has little importance? Because the Argentine remains the key playmaker in the Barcelona squad. With five goals to his record, the 33-year-old is the most prolific Barca forward this term.
What’s more, Messi currently tops the list of players with most key passes without an assist in Europe’s top five leagues – 25.
The above-mentioned stat, however, indicates an even bigger problem in Barca’s squad – the Catalans badly need a striker who would be able to finish Leo’s passes.
As a reminder, Luis Suarez, who was sold to Atletico Madrid in September, has netted five goals in the 2020/21 La Liga campaign. Antoine Griezmann and Martin Braithwaite, meanwhile, have four league strikes between them this term so far.
