If Messi didn’t get his Spanish citizenship in time, we might’ve seen him actually play for Cadiz.
Back in 2005, Leo Messi, 18 years old at that time, played twice against Cadiz, in August and December.
The local fans remained impressed with the Argentine’s performance in the first game, and Cadiz’s assistant coach Luis Soler asked Messi whether he’d like to join them.
Leo said that he’d love to play in a beautiful city like Cadiz.
Back then, the youngster couldn’t play for Barca because of bureaucratic problems: he didn’t have the Spanish citizenship yet and the non-EU spots had been already taken by Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Rafa Marquez.
In the end, Messi got his citizenship and stayed; he returned to the Carranza stadium in December and put in another show.
Cadiz considered making a loan offer for Leo but the move never went through.
