Chelsea transfer rumours: Blues' key advantage in Rice pursuit, Giroud claim, Gilmour wanted

Chelsea’s start to the 2020/21 season has been fantastic, with Frank Lampard’s team fighting very strongly on two fronts.

The Blues are currently third in the Premier League, having picked up 19 points from their opening 10 matches of the campaign. As well as this, the host of new signings have helped the west London-based side reach the last 16 of the Champions League, where they are all-but-certain to finish as the winners of Group E.

However, Lampard might be tempted to once again have a look in the transfer market when the January window opens in a few weeks’ time. In light of this, today we bring you the very latest transfer rumours and stories which concern Chelsea.

Gilmour wanted by Napoli

Napoli are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The 19-year-old has been watched by the Naples-based club since last season, the report states, and they could even offload one of their current players in order to sign him.

Gennaro Gattuso could look to sell Stanislav Lobotka to make room for Gilmour, who broke into the Blues’ first-team towards the end of last season. The report claims that Napoli would look to sign the highly-rated teenager on an initial loan deal in January, with an option to make the contract a permanent one.

Cassano’s Giroud claim

Former Italy star Antonio Cassano believes Olivier Giroud moving away from London ‘makes no sense’ amid rumours he could be set to leave Chelsea.

Giroud has struggled for game-time so far this season following the form of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham, but has shown why Lampard could look to keep him with some crucial goals in recent weeks, including a four-goal haul against Sevilla on Wednesday evening.

Cassano, speaking to Tuttosport via Sport Witness, said: “Giroud has made a choice of life, with his family he wants to stay in London. Changing to play like he does at Chelsea makes no sense.”

The France striker has been linked with a move away from the Premier League, with Inter Milan and Napoli both reportedly keen on his services.

Chilwell’s role in Rice pursuit

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell could have a big role to play in the club’s pursuit of reported target Declan Rice, according to The Telegraph.

The report states that Rice remains top of Lampard’s wish-list, but a January move for the West Ham United midfielder is unlikely.

The Hammers wanted £80m for their midfield powerhouse in the summer, a price the Blues were unwilling to pay, which is a similar situation that the west London club were in before they signed Chilwell from Leicester City.

The Foxes demanded £50m for their left-back and after looking at potential alternatives, Lampard made it clear that he wanted the English defender. The Chelsea boss could be set to adopt the same ploy for the pursuit of Rice.
