Mathematically, Barca can end up as league leaders by the end of the month.

Ronald Koeman has recently said that he sees Barcelona near the top in La Liga by the end of 2020. Today, we will take a look at whether this is a realistic thing to expect, and, if so, how should the stars align in order for it to happen.

Where Barca could end up in La Liga standings if they win all 6 December games

Barcelona currently sit in 7th with 14 points after nine games. Real Sociedad are the current league leaders with 24 points in 11 games while Atletico Madrid are just behind with 23 points in nine games.

Who do we play?

Barca’s La Liga opponents in December: Cadiz (away), Levante (home), Real Sociedad (home), Valencia (home), Valladolid (away), Eibar (home).

We will assume that the Catalans win all of their December matches.

Who do our rivals play?

Real Sociedad’s La Liga opponents in December: Alaves (away), Eibar (home), Barcelona (away), Levante (away), Atletico Madrid (home), Bilbao (away).

Atletico Madrid’s La Liga opponents in December: Valladolid (home), Real Madrid (away), Elche (home), Real Sociedad (away), Getafe (home).

There are several matches where our rivals could lose points. To start with, we’ve supposed that Barca will all of their upcoming six matches and one of them is against Sociedad, so that’s one loss for La Real already. Second, the Basque team are going to face Atletico Madrid so no matter the result, one of the league leaders will lose points. Finally, Sociedad will have to face their arch-rivals Athletic Bilbao away.

As for Atleti, besides the mentioned Sociedad game, they will also take on Real Madrid away.

Our expectations

If Barca win all of their December games, they will have 32 points by the end of the month. Here’s what needs to happen for the Catalans to climb to the top of the table,

  • Sociedad need to earn no more than 7 points (two wins, one draw, three losses would be an ideal result for us).
  • Atleti need to earn no more than 8 points (two wins, two draws, one loss).

However, we don’t believe the two sides to crumble this early into the season. Although Tribuna.com expect that Barca will climb the ladder this month, we think they are unlikely to get higher than third place.
